UAE to take over US PORTS

Here is the question greencrest1272 and I have discussed (not argued [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]). If this port deal was completely safe and reasonable (which i just can't see letting Arabs take over American ports) what would be the political benefit from the deal for the president? Let's say the story never makes the backpages of the newspaper...How does the deal benefit him politically?

Republicans can face the facts like any other party or group. When the President of the United States has a rating of 34%, things like the ports deal does not make since. The best case scenerio (which I mentioned earlier) would be the deal is never mentioned to the country, and we are not talking about it right now. That scenerio benefits the Republicans and George Bush none. The worst case scenerio, which has happened, is that the president goes out on a limb and loses support from his party.

I am not a Republican, but I believe I can speak for all Republicans when I say that George Bush should be more concerned with this year's midterm elections and a 34% approval rating, than selling ports to Arabs.

We should have finished the Saddam affair and SPLIT- it has been a burden since and it couldn't have gotten much worse. And Dubai- they are not just foreign owned, they are owned by the GOVERNMENT . If we don't run our own ports why should the UAE be allowed to? I'll let'em up my taxes to close the borders, make the illegals pay into SS, fed and state taxes, and run some of the stuff like this. A port into this country for example, a raise for the Jarheads in Iraq, if people want to come into the US to work, fine just make sure you get all the shots and they are legal and paying their fair share. Presidents can not be concerned with approval ratings to the point that it interferes with their job...those ratings often fluctuate up and down 3 or 4 times a year. Few presidents in history have had high national approval ratings during a time of military engagement...just the way it is. Abraham Lincoln's approval rating fell as low as 20% at one point. Woodrow Wilson's was rarely above 30% and FDR, JFK and LBJ all had similar problems.

However, I do tend to agree with spudsmac(rare occassion) on this one that outsourcing is rarely ever good for America. I have a hard time justifying it based on pure Capitalists' principles. Their has to be some Nationalism involved...if we are going to buy goods and services from American companies they need to try a little harder to keep American workers. Thats just the way I see it.

There is no pretty way to spin a 34% approval rating. Bill Clinton was in the mid 80's while he was being impeached.

George Bush is in trouble. His party is turning against him. Candidates in the 2006 midterms have to make a choice. Run on President Bush's record and approval rating and popularity, or make a new path.

Not trying to spin it...just trying to state a fact. Approval ratings go up and down like the weather...thats just the finnicky nature of the American public. Clinton's approval rating had never reached 50% until 4 years into his presidency when the Ken Starr investigations began and the country developed an aura of sympathy around the poor victim president. His approval rating actually leaped more than 10% points in one week during the impeachment hearings to his personal high of 73. GW needs to learn a lesson from that and stop acting so Texas tough...ole Bill could make Clint Eastwood cry with those droopy eyes choked up emotion...reminds me of Forrest Gump talkin about how much he loved Jenny.

I would just like for somebody to name 1 American company with the credentials and capabilities of UAE. I honestly can't think of any and my personal opinion is that there isn't one. I dont think there is an American company capable of taking on a job as big as this. I know that the thought of having and Arab based company do a job of this magnitude can seem a shaky but I honestly do not feel that it is that big of a deal. Obviously there is the question why would Bush want to do something like this to make people further doubt him and bring more conflict and dividing to Washington. I dont have an answer to that, but you take 9/11 out of the eqaution and this isnt even a back page story in the newspaper.
